Major Requirements

  1. Ability to run with speed and determination.
  2. Ability to run elusively with the ball.
  3. Ability to position oneself correctly.
  4. An all round fitness.
  5. Ability to handle the ball confidently; catching, holding and passing.
  6. Ability to control and kick effectively.
  7. Ability to tackle effectively.

Essential Skills

Handling

  1. Catch and receive ball correctly.
  2. Ability to pass ball; speed of pass, body position, length of pass, height of pass, in front of chest of receiver.
  3. Ability to hold the ball correctly two hands or one, if one hand-ball in outside arm leaving outside field arm free for hand off.
  4. Ability to protect ball in maul and to make it available for support player.
  5. Ability to stand in tackle for release of ball to support.
  6. Ability to throw the ball into line out if required.
  7. Ability to maintain continuity of attack; to rip from maul if necessary.
  8. Ability to field any ball in the air or on the ground.

Running

  1. Ability to run with pace and determination carrying ball.
  2. Ability to run with control; change pace, swerve, change step, side step, change direction
  3. Ability to run with body angle slightly forward.
  4. Ability to run with high knee action and arm in position for hand off.

Kicking

  1. Ability to kick accurately with either foot.
  2. Ability to execute a variety of kicks; cross kick, chip ahead, clearing line kick, deep punt, knee kick, grubber kick, dummy kick, drop kick.
  3. Ability to dribble ball.

Contact

  1. Ability to tackle effectively from front, rear and side.
  2. Ability to hand off and to burst through a tackle.
  3. Ability to retain possession in contact.
  4. Ability to maul, rip or make ball available.
  5. Ability to ruck ball if close to play on ground.
  6. Ability to position body for drive; running or in a maul.
  7. Ability to fall on ball and quickly regain feet.

Position

  1. Knowledge and skill of positioning for defence or attack.
  2. Ability to position correctly (with variation) for set play; scrum, line out, 25 drop out, kick off.
  3. Position to support play and make extra man.
  4. Position for cover defence.
  5. Positioning for various ¾ moves

  1. Your task is to score tries, finish off play effectively.
  2. Be hungry for the ball.
  3. Your task is also to prevent tries being scored against you.
  4. To support play.
  5. To make the ball available when necessary.
  6. Run with pace, power and determination.
